Quite a few. Service members have access to specific benefits with their own beneficiary designations that don’t automatically flow through a will. There are also deployment considerations. Well enough that it makes a practical difference. Davis County’s Second District Court has its own procedural rhythms, judicial preferences, and scheduling patterns that differ from Salt Lake or Utah County courts.

Layton has a mix of long-established families and newer residents. Does the length of time you've lived in Utah affect your legal options in a divorce or custody case?

For divorce, residency matters at the outset. At least one spouse must have lived in Utah for three months before filing. For custody, the key factor is where the child has lived for the past six consecutive months under the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act. That’s what establishes Utah’s jurisdiction to make custody orders.

What's the most common mistake Layton residents make when they try to handle a legal matter without an attorney?

The most common and most costly mistake is assuming that standard forms and online templates are sufficient. Utah has specific execution requirements for wills, and a will that doesn’t meet those requirements can be contested or disregarded entirely.
